Evaluation:Â
In my reimagining of Roald Dahl's classic, I diverged from the original horror theme, blending thriller and comedy elements to create a unique narrative. The project's standout features include the diverse camera angles that added visual depth and dynamics, alongside a strategic sound design that brought my vision to life. This combination of visual storytelling with auditory elements underscores the power of integrating technical skill with creative narrative. The project has been a rewarding journey, demonstrating the impact of thoughtful camera work and sound integration in animatics.
Areas for improvement within My Landlady Animatic Project:
Incorporating colour into the animatic could serve as a valuable tool for pre-visualizing the mood and atmosphere before full production. By experimenting with different shades and tones in the animatic phase, it's possible to gauge how color can influence the viewer's perception and emotional response to various scenes. This approach could be especially useful for distinguishing between the more ominous and lighter moments of the narrative, providing a clearer roadmap for the final film's visual style.
Additionally, adding a close-up shot of the main character's face as the door opens to reveal the zombie would significantly enhance the emotional impact of this key moment, offering a clearer insight into the character's reaction.
Evaluation:
Reflecting on the project, I feel satisfied with how I addressed the brief's emphasis on camera work, narrative, and editing. My transition from Sony Vegas Pro and Davinci Resolve to the Adobe suite has been a valuable learning curve. This project also underscored the importance of resilience and adaptability. Despite the resolution challenge, I was able to compensate through effective use of masking and persistence. The jittery effect, initially perceived as a flaw, surprisingly enhanced the portrayal of a virus-like phenomenon in the narrative, reducing the need for perfect keyframes. This experience taught me the significance of pushing through obstacles and finding creative solutions.
An aspect I particularly enjoyed was the initial green screen clip featuring stairs. This segment acted as a metaphor, illustrating how repetitive days go by while the main character remains relatively still in life, echoing a sense of stagnation and the passage of time.
Additionally, I dabbled in sound design using Ableton, creating some sound effect elements from scratch. Though not the main focus of this project, this rough, yet effective sound design subtly complemented the choppy, glitchy sci-fi visuals, contributing to the overall immersive experience.
Title: Areas for Improvement in My Short Film Project (what I would do differently next time)
Incorporating the Hand into Different Shots:
Aim to include the hand in both close-up side views and wider shots when the camera zooms out for consistency and visual depth.
Keyframe Refinement:
Address the issue with the slightly wiggling poster as the handheld camera approaches it. Despite appreciating the jittery effect elsewhere, here it detracts, making the poster seem unstably attached to the wall.
Filming and Drone Footage:
Allocate more time and attempts for filming, particularly when using drone footage, to capture the best possible shots.
Audio-Visual Synchronization:
Focus on aligning the audio of special effects more precisely with the corresponding visual effects on screen.
Clip Length Balancing:
Work on balancing the length of each clip. Recognize the need to possibly include additional footage that was omitted due to the two-minute constraint, which could have enhanced the storyline explanation.
Color Grading and Special Effects:
Spend more time on color grading and adding more special effects or transitions, such as warps, lens flares, or chromatic distortion, to complement the visuals effectively.
