I believe I demonstrated strong time management throughout this project, completing a significant portion of the fight previs within the first week. This early progress allowed me to refine the introduction and exit shots later. Additionally, I maintained a professional approach by regularly seeking feedback from my tutor and classmates, ensuring my previs remained effective and met the intended goals.
One of my main strengths in the first project was my ability to create a suspenseful and engaging previs sequence. By structuring the narrative with clear rising and falling tension, I built anticipation and kept the audience on edge. Elements such as a flashing red light effectively conveyed danger, while the fight sequence escalated the tension before resolving - though the final cliffhanger with banging on the door left room for further suspense.
Lighting played a crucial role in enhancing the storytelling. I used lighting within Maya to emphasize important physical elements and guide the viewer’s attention. Similarly, my camera work contributed significantly to the overall impact. I strategically used close-ups to capture the character’s expressions at key moments and zoomed in on her hands during punches to intensify the action, ensuring that movements felt dynamic and purposeful. Constantly considering the framing of the characters and where the audience would be looking on screen.
However, there are areas I would improve. Some camera placements could have been refined to center shots better or create smoother rotations. I also noticed that certain camera movements may be too intense for viewers prone to motion sickness, so I would reduce excessive movement in the fight sequences.
Another aspect requiring refinement is the animation itself. Some of the character’s movements felt slightly uneven, particularly in her walk cycle when leaving the room. While I incorporated feedback from a guest speaker to address this, I still feel this area could be further polished. Additionally, I spent too much time focusing on foot placement - especially during the fight shots and table shot - when the feet were rarely visible, although the rough placement was useful for determining where the weight of the character needed positioning. As a result, I didn’t dedicate enough time to refining facial expressions, leading to a lack of emotional clarity in some moments. If I were to revisit this project, I would prioritize expressive facial animation to enhance the character’s performance.
While I made strong progress overall, I recognize that my Unreal Engine animation in particular had much room for improvement. This largely stemmed from my beginner's experience with the software. Despite this, I’m proud of how quickly I adapted - reaching a functional level in Unreal much faster than I initially did in Maya. That said, my confidence and control within Unreal remain behind what I’ve developed in Maya. The project included some visual glitches and lacked the complexity of actions I now realize I could have implemented. However, this experience highlighted Unreal’s potential as a powerful tool for efficient previs. I intend to continue developing my skills in Unreal to expand my previsualization capabilities and support my long-term specialism.
I feel I have demonstrated strong fundamental previsualization methods by focusing on the core essence of the sequence rather than minor details. Using simplified simulations to represent complex visuals allowed me to maintain efficiency without straying from the task at hand. Additionally, my knowledge of physics principles, including the 12 Principles of Animation and Newton’s Three Laws of Motion - gained through my Animation Fundamentals and Character Mechanics modules - proved invaluable in creating realistic movement throughout the previs.
Moving forward, I have learned to be more confident in my previs speed. Many previs sequences exclude facial animation and allow for some sliding feet, yet I was pleased with how much animation and posing I managed to complete in the given timeframe. The actions remain clear and understandable, even with minimal polish, reinforcing why I enjoy previs - it emphasizes efficiency over excessive detail.
